Tasks for the Month of January

Continue flower maintenance such as deadheading, weeding. Fertilize as needed

The installation of spring bulbs should be completed by the middle of the month

Maintain clean up of leaves and other debris from lawn and shrub areas

Prune trees to effectively shape and to rise undercarriages

Shrub beds should have winter applications of mulch

Crape Myrtles should be pruned this time of year

Applications of dormant oil to shrubs this time of year prevent or reduce insect problems in the warmer months

Prune shrubs to open them up and enhance light and air penetration

Continue cutting Ornamental Grasses back and begin to cut Liriope back

Post-emergent weed control can be applied to shrub beds and lawns as needed

Fescue lawns should have an application of slow release turf fertilizer

After the middle of January you can gradually lower warm season turf (Bermuda & Zoysia) about ¼ inch per mowing until you reach the height of 1 inch for Bermuda and 1.5 inches for Zoysia
